COVID-19 has slowed down to the point where very few people are concerned about being out and about. The weather is warming (the time changes Sunday!) and the truth is that we’re all ready to travel somewhere. Everyone is planning spring break and summer trips.

For cities like LaGrange, where tourism is growing, this is the time of year to really take advantage. We know that there are residents who scoff at the idea that people would come to LaGrange on vacation, but that’s the completely wrong mindset to have.

With Great Wolf Lodge set up here, Sweetland Amphitheatre bringing in artists of sorts of genres and West Point Lake ripe for fishing, there are plenty of reasons someone might want to stop in LaGrange for a night or two. We’re not that far from Atlanta and with Interstate 85 running right through here, there’s plenty of opportunity for someone to stop, spend a few nights in Troup County, and then continue on to the rest of their vacation.

We also think being on the state line helps with that. We’ve all been on a car ride where the driver or parent says, “We’ll stop for lunch when we get to the state line,” or something along those lines.

That means that anything our city can add to enhance our tourism is a positive thing. Give people one more reason to stop.

Last week, tiny doors were installed in locations all over LaGrange. Seven students with LaGrange Academy’s National Art Honor Society spent the early part of a day last week installing tiny doors at Sweetland Amphitheater, Pretty Good Books, the LaGrange Art Museum, the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce, Sweet Roast Cafe, Lafayette Society of Performing Arts and Charlie Joseph’s Bull Street location.

The doors are all different designs, and they are very unique. There’s a similar project in Atlanta, where guests can go online and see all of the places to find tiny doors all around the city.

Now, residents and tourists alike can do the same in LaGrange.

How cool is that?

It may not be the deciding factor to get someone traveling through to stop by from Interstate 85, but it could give tourists something fun to do when they stop for lunch and have a few hours to kill.

And who knows, maybe they’ll find a shop or two to go into while they’re here.
