It took 11 innings, but the Troup County baseball team beat Columbus 3-2 on Monday. It was sweet revenge for the Tigers as they got hammered by Columbus last Friday.

Columbus got the scoring started when they plated a run in the second inning. The Tigers responded when Tripp Cummings hit a single on a ground ball to drive in Brett Haynes.

Brett Haynes was the hero on the night when he launched a ball over the right field wall to score two runs and take a 3-1 lead in the top of the eleventh.

Columbus scored a run in the bottom of the eleventh to make it 3-2 and had the bases loaded with two outs. Daniel Martin struck out the final batter to give the Tigers a huge region victory.

Martin had a solid outing in relief as he pitched three and ⅓ innings allowing only three hits with four strikeouts and no earned runs.

Devon Murphy got the start on the mound and was stellar in his seven and ⅔ innings pitched. He only allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out 10 batters. He also had a solid day at the plate going two for five with one run scored.

It was Brett Haynes that proved the decider as he had the Tigers best offensive performance on the night. He went two for four with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs to go along with a walk.

The Tigers improved to 7-4 overall and got their first win in region play to improve to 1-1 in the region. Weather permitting, Troup County’s next game is a doubleheader against region opponent Spencer on Wednesday.
