Another fantastic season for the Callaway baseball team reached its conclusion on Tuesday when the team lost back-to-back games of a doubleheader against Vidalia in the AA semifinals.

Game one saw the Cavaliers fall 2-0 in a pitcher’s duel.

Justin Moore got the start on the mound and was his usual stuff as he pitched a complete game and only allowed three hits and two earned runs on three strikeouts.

The Cavaliers were able to load the bases in the top of the second inning but could not score a run to take the lead. Vidalia scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Callaway was able to get runners on first and second in the top of the seventh but fell short of mounting a rally.

Hits were hard to come by for both teams as Tucker Starling went 2-for-3 as the only multi-hit player in the game. Andrew Locke, Brantin Swanson and Jacob Karvelas each got a hit apiece in the game to round out the offense for the Cavaliers in game one.

The Cavaliers actually out-hit for the Indians 5-3 in game one and were unlucky to see themselves lose.

Game two was a different story as the Cavaliers lost 17-0.

The Cavaliers could not get much going on offense going in the game. CJ Stephens got the Cavaliers only hit.

Starling got the start on the mound with Bryce Hubbard, Garrett Huckleberry and Karvelas coming into the game to relieve him as the Cavaliers deployed a number of pitchers to try and slow the red-hot bats of the Indians down.

It was a tough evening for the Cavaliers who swept aside their first two opponents in the playoffs with ease. This series loss snapped a streak of making three straight semifinal appearances — the COVID-19 shortened season not included — at the state tournament for the Cavaliers. Callaway has been one of the best programs in AA over the last few years and will be looking to continue that success next year. The program will have a difficult time replacing seniors Tucker Starling, Justin Moore, Jacob Karvelas, Andrew Locke, and Caden McMillian, who all played their final game for Callaway but has plenty of young talent to call upon in the years to come.
