The LaGrange girls volleyball team hosted the first summer camp under the leadership of new head coach Andrea Barrientos this week. The four day camp was designed to help sharpen the skills of the 41 girls from rising seventh graders up to twelfth graders, who came out and participated.
The camp brought a plethora of different voices for the young volleyball players. Valerie Armstrong — an assistant coach from Auburn Montgomery — was a guest speaker Monday. Tuesday, the Granger players got more hands-on instruction from two players and head coach Faith Gineris from Point University. This was followed by LaGrange head coach Mo McKenney, who gave instruction on Wednesday.
The camp was focused on building and reinforcing the fundamentals, so they can build on them and sharpen their skills once they come back for school in the fall.
Senior Lauren Park worked as an assistant coach and former LaGrange student Carmen Lynch helped on Wednesday and Thursday.
This was the first time the Grangers held a volleyball summer camp in the new facility. It took a lot of planning to work around the other athletic schedules and when to use the gym, but for Barrientos it was worth all the effort.
“The VB camp exceeded all my expectations,” Barrientos said. “At the end, some girls and parents asked us if we could have another this summer.”
The Grangers volleyball team will host a satellite summer camp in Auburn University Montgomery on July 16. Only the 40 players that make up the freshman, JV, and varsity teams will be attending this camp.
“All the players are super excited about this opportunity,” Barrientos said. “We can’t wait.”
