The LaGrange City Council approved a second reading on Tuesday to rename a portion of Miller Street. The area of the street renamed runs from Miller Street to S. Greenwood Street. According to city manager Meg Kelsey, the proposed portion of the road will be renamed West Mulberry Street.

This change will work to match the current street’s name (Douglas St.) to the connected West Mulberry Street where several developments are set to take place in the future.

Historically, according to the Troup County Historical Archives, Miller Street was named after Sheriff Thomas Compton Miller, who served nine years as the sheriff of Troup County in the late 1800s.

“The way the road is set up now is very confusing because the name of the road changes for no apparent reason,” Mayor Jim Thornton said. “I think it will make it easier for public safety officials to know what address they’re going to. I think it will also make it much easier for tourists who may be looking for the Mulberry Street Cemetery to be able to find it.”

He said the change will clear up confusion.

“The city staff reached out to the two current residents on Douglas Street to notify them about the actual name change and they didn’t have any objections to it,” Thornton said.

“The road is a very short section,” he said.

According to Thornton, the name change will be effective immediately.

“We don’t know how quickly the city will take to change the sign, but it will take some time to do it, and it will also take some time to notify the post office about the name change,” he said.

From this new change, current residents in the neighborhood will have to update their identity cards and mailing addresses. Businesses and landmarks along the road, such as the Mulberry Street Cemetery, Hawkins Oil Co. Plant and Jackson Beverages will not be affected by this change.
